Product Description This 1991 release was the follow-up to George s solo piano albums AUTUMN (1980), WINTER INTO SPRING (1982), and DECEMBER (1982). Review George Winston has the unique ability to play bright, uplifting, yet stingingly melancholy piano, and Summer is one of the best examples of his fine work around. Somewhere between the ambient-style tone poems of Winter into Spring and the melodious charm of Autumn, Summer dances brightly, evoking images of relaxing under a tree or children playing in a field. Highlights are many and include Winston's "Lullaby," full of melody and lyrical tension; "Hummingbird," with its whirling repetitive structure, reflecting the vibrant dimension of nature during the summer season; and the fun, rambling "Corrina, Corrina." In short, this is another album of what Winston does best--underscoring the poetic moments of life through poignant, beautiful music. --Karen Karleski --TiendaGeorge Winston has long had a reputation for being able to evoke different moods and emotions through his music. The newly reissued CD Summer is no exception. The tracks bring to mind a carefree attitude, with light and fun pieces throughout the collection. Comprised both of original compositions as well as notable covers (such as "Fragrant Fields", "The Garden", "Spring Creek", "Living Without You", and "Corrina, Corrina"). He shows a unique ability to incorporate numerous different styles into his performances. Like so many other of his albums, Summer provides a wonderful, relaxed feeling and is great listening. The new special addition has two additional bonuses: printable sheet music for the hauntingly beautiful "Lullaby" and an additional track "Old Friends" that was not included on the original 1991 release. This is by far one of George Winston's most accessible recordings and provides a great introduction to his solo piano work for anyone who may not have previously experienced his music. Summer lives up to its billing: bringing to mind through the music the carefree feelings associated with the most wonderful of seasons. --BlogCritics MusicIt's almost a shame that pianist George Winston is such a pillar of the New Age-heavy Windham Hill label, because this album the long-in-coming fourth volume of his ''seasonal'' solo collections, following Autumn (1980), December, and Winter into Spring (both 1982) is not only his best yet but just the kind of thing a lot of people who shun this type of music on principle might actually like. Tranquil without being meditative and void of the sometimes abstract virtuosity of his earlier records, Summer includes pieces by composers ranging from Randy Newman to Carmine Coppola, as well as Winston himself. Though a few of the tracks bear traces of the New Age Curse so many sweet-tempered arpeggios you want to scream most are simple, reflective pieces with their roots in age-old gospel and folk harmonies, played with a truly captivating tenderness. If you've always wondered what a cross between Chopin and Pete Seeger would sound like, here's your chance to find out. Reviewed by Linda Sanders --Entertainment Weekly
