For me spotting a dragonfly is rare so when I do I feel lucky and make a wish. It also inspires me to translate this delight into art. Think of these fantasy versions as fluttering invitations to joy. Since dragonflies don’t hold still I had to do a little research into how their wings are shaped and was surprised by the variety. Turns out they’re on every continent except Antarctica. I sketched out four different types as a guide for free motion stitching on loosely pleated sheer fabrics. To not so subtly suggest the lyrical I used vintage sheet music accented with shimmery color for both the hearts and the background. (The paper has been wet laminated to fabric to preserve and reinforce.) Furthering the notions of delicacy and fineness, I drew out the body with lace and beads. Each of the four unique collages is sewn onto a folded and blank 5” x 7” card, signed by the artist, and comes with a matching envelope. If desired they can easily be displayed in a standard sized picture frame. I hope the whimsy of these winged creatures can help express your own loving sentiments.
