Illustrated 1940’s advertising imagery is unmistakable. When children are depicted they are cherubic and cheerful – and in this card set, very well turned out. I was gifted by my mom-in-law with a tattered Lane Bryant catalog for children’s wear that her mother had saved since way, way back. It is a gold mine of innocence and quaint advertising copy. And of course a more formal style of dress. I am a fan of nostalgia and imagining good times past. It can inspire us to value even more what’s wonderful about the present. In this card set I wanted to honor how we celebrated childhood. And so I used actual catalog pages, carefully laminating them to fabric before I playfully embellished with organza flowers, shirting yo-yo’s, lace borders, buttons, and needlework. Each of the four unique collages is permanently adhered onto a folded and blank 5” x 7” acid-free card with a matching envelope. If desired they can easily be displayed in a standard sized picture frame. May the sweetness of these bygone children can help express your own loving sentiments. I hope the playfulness of my approach carries through to your enjoying this piece. Making happy art for your eyes is how I share joy.
